In this blog, Paul Roche, MD of Buildbase, gives his view on Gender Diversity and the importance of it within the male-dominated Construction Industry…
Why wouldn’t we want a diverse organisation?
Just looking from the talent side of things, if we don’t look for ways to enable women to access the same opportunities as men, then we are effectively missing out on 50% of the talent pool. In any other business scenario, you wouldn’t dream of excluding 50% of people from an opportunity.
Diversity In The Construction Industry
In the construction industry, effecting change is hard because we are fragmented and still viewed as a male-dominated environment, but we have to do more as an industry to change that perception. There are some incredible women driving successes in our industry, but we don’t share these stories widely enough. Women outside of our industry don’t know about the fantastic role models we have or the fantastic opportunities that the sector brings.

At Buildbase, we’ve got some really talented and successful females, but we need more because we always need more talent! That isn’t to the detriment of males, it’s about working together and creating the best team. Having the best team means greater creativity, greater innovation, increased engagement and over time, better financial results.
Ultimately we need a truly diverse organisation, so this isn't just about gender, but we have to start our journey somewhere, and we have chosen to start it here. It’s not easy to drive this change, but it’s absolutely the right thing to do.
